Open Door is probably one of the country’s most resourceful answers to the question of how an endowed middle class Church can continue to be relevant in a poverty stricken neighborhood . So many of our “drop in friends’ have a multitude of serious needs. We see the suffering with lack of jobs, food, and income to pay rent , utilities etc. There are also many physical health issues that are being neglected because of the lack of insurance or income. One of these health issues is lack of eye glasses for reading and distance. Open Door has a program for adults who need reading glasses or to have their eyes examined by an Optician and have glasses made. We had a young man from the neighborhood volunteering for us. He shared with me that he had a hard time getting jobs because he had such poor eyesight. We made him an appointment to have his eyes examined and glasses made. He is like a different person. He smiles and comes to visit us to let us know how he doing. He is working now. We are blessed with our resources and some funds to help make life a little easier.
